# Appendix F: The As-Built Template

From Let the AI Be Smart by Jason Santiago. lettheaibesmart.com/tools

The plan was a guess you made before reality had its say, and reality always has its say. The as-built is the record of what reality said. On a jobsite, the as-built drawings show where the pipe actually ran, not where the plan wished it ran, because the next crew to open that wall deserves the truth. Fill this out at the end of every build so the next job, or the next AI session walking in with zero memory, starts from what is actually there.

## The form

- **Job / build:** *which project this belongs to*
- **Date closed out:** *when you wrote this*
- **What was planned:** *the original intent, short. What we set out to build, from before reality broke the plan.*
- **What was actually built, and why it differs:** *the honest delta. The ground was different than the survey, the part was on backorder, the approach didn't survive contact. Name each divergence and what forced it. No shame in the delta. The shame is in hiding it.*
- **Decisions made along the way, and who made them:** *every real call: the choice, the reason, and a name. AI, human expert, or me. A decision with no recorded reason gets undone later by someone who never knew what it was protecting.*
- **Where everything lives:** *repos, containers, configs, the constitution file, the punch list, where the credentials are kept (never the credentials themselves). One list. The next person should not have to go on a treasure hunt.*
- **What the next person needs to know:** *the things that look wrong but aren't, and why. The things that are fragile, and where. The one thing you would say out loud if you were handing over the keys in person.*
- **Recorded by / date:** *a name and a date*

## The rule

The next session does not start from the plan. It starts from this. Hand the worker the constitution, the state, and the as-built, and it can walk in goldfish-brained and still build on truth. Whatever you skip writing down here, you will rediscover the hard way, at the worst possible moment, at your own cost.
